If you’re a government leader, you’re very aware of today’s challenging environment: navigating competing priorities, constrained budgets, emerging technologies, demanding stakeholders, and the constant push to do more with less. It’s a world where change is the only constant, and navigating it can feel like steering through a storm.

You’re likely looking for proven practices, solutions, and ideas to simplify complexity, make sense amid uncertainty, and establish a vision of what’s really possible.

So, how do today’s leaders and teams deliver great service in such a complex environment?

One word: Intentionally.

This three-part blog series plunges into the core of leadership: driving positive change with a team united by purpose, meaning, and mission—all grounded in great service. In this second post, we’ll explore the power of positive strategy because leadership is as much about attitude as it is about action.

Enjoy the journey and lead well – your team deserves it.

The Power of Team: It’s More than Matching Uniforms

What comes to mind when you think of the best team? A championship-winning sports squad? A life-saving surgical team? NASA’s team of space explorers? Whatever it is, one thing is clear: greatness goes beyond the uniform and logo.

A truly exceptional team transcends surface-level appearances, coincidence, and the common goal. It’s about influential leadership that deliberately shapes team dynamics, turning a group of individuals into a high-performing unit. Great leaders build more than a team; they foster trust, set a compelling vision, clarify roles, and create a collaborative culture.

Great leaders are essentially architects of teamwork.

Thornton May, the technology futurist and author of The New Know, emphasizes that collaboration doesn’t happen by accident; it’s designed by leaders who understand its importance. He highlights three essentials for fostering collaboration:

  • Desire to Collaborate: Leaders must ignite a genuine desire to work together and ensure that each member is committed to the team’s success.
  • Leveraging Tools: Mastery of collaboration tools is critical. Leaders should strategically select and deploy tools that enhance communication and coordination.
  • Active Listening: Leaders must listen—not just hear. Real collaboration happens when team members prioritize collective success over personal validation.

High-performing teams are those where individual egos take a backseat to collective goals. When the focus shifts from being right to getting it right, teams move beyond zero-sum thinking, fostering a culture where everyone wins together—or learns together.

Take a moment to reflect on your team: Is it firing on all cylinders? Are there areas where you could lead more intentionally?

The best leaders know that empowering a team isn’t about control—it’s about aligning individual strengths toward a shared purpose. By putting ego aside, actively listening, and honing the team’s collective goals, you not only elevate your team’s performance but also advance your own leadership journey.

In the end, a team’s success is measured not just by what it achieves but by how it achieves it together. By focusing on collaboration and collective success, any group can transform into a high-performing team.
