GovExec Names Frank Konkel Editor-in-Chief

With a decade of experience across the company, Konkel is tapped to lead GovExec’s expanding public sector, defense, and space reporting

Feb. 21, 2024

Washington, DC (February 21, 2024) — GovExec, the market-leading sales and marketing intelligence company for government leaders and contractors, announced today that award-winning reporter and editor Frank Konkel will transition from his current role as vice president of editorial and an editor at large for Nextgov/FCW to editor-in-chief of the flagship GovExec brand. In taking on this new leadership position, Konkel will be responsible for overseeing the editorial direction of GovExec in conjunction with the heads of the company’s brands, including Defense One, Government Executive, Nextgov/FCW, Route Fifty, and Washington Technology.

Having previously reported on city and state issues in his home state of Michigan, Konkel began covering the intersection of government and technology in 2013 upon moving to Washington, D.C. After joining GovExec in 2014, he continued to grow this focus, reporting on emerging tech and specializing in examining how intelligence agencies and the Defense Department were working with big tech companies. This reporting has won him multiple awards, including the Neal and Azbee awards for reporting on government technology issues. Since 2017, Konkel has served as the executive editor of Nextgov, where he led the publication to its highest web traffic while remaining an active reporter. In 2023, he took over GovExec 360 as vice president of editorial.

“In his 10 years at GovExec, Frank has become an integral part of our editorial team and a respected figure in the industry at large. While gaining experience across GoveExec’s brands, he approaches all of his roles as a reporter first, which comes with integrity and a drive to get at the heart of the topics and stories impacting the evolving public sector landscape,” said Constance Sayers, GovExec’s chief revenue officer and leader of GovExec 360. “We look forward to having him at the helm of GovExec’s next chapter.”

As Editor-in-Chief, Konkel will lead the editorial departments, with Defense One Executive Editor Brad Peniston, Nextgov/FCW Executive Editor Adam Mazmanian, Route Fifty Executive Editor Elizabeth Dagineau, Washington Technology Editor-in-Chief Nick Wakeman, Government Executive Executive Editor Tanya Ballard Brown, and Manager of Editorial Operations Chawndese Hylton as his direct reports. In addition to working on enriching GovExec’s position in the defense and state and local markets, Konkel will guide the company’s expansion into new topical areas while addressing the ever-evolving tech, workforce, and geopolitical landscapes.

“I’m really excited to be the editor-in-chief at GovExec and continue working alongside such quality journalists. It’s my aim to further create conditions that support top-tier reporting and partner with our editorial teams to best capture what’s sure to be a very interesting year for the government and our readers,” said Konkel.
