Press Release: Government Executive Celebrates 50 Year Anniversary

Leading Washington publisher maintains leadership as most trusted media brand for federal news content

April 14, 2019

Washington, DC (April 14, 2019) — Government Executive, the leading provider of news for federal government managers, is marking its 50th year in Washington by launching two unique award programs to honor a select group of leaders and innovators in public service each year: The Government Hall of Fame and The Theodore Roosevelt Government Leadership Awards (also known as “The Teddies”).

Ranked as the most trusted brand of all federal-focused media sites and among the top 10 most-visited sites for federal news by Market Connections, Government Executive continues to be driven by its 50-year mission to support the work of public and private sector leaders who help governments better serve their citizens and constituents.

“We’re extremely proud of the legacy that Government Executive has built over the last 50 years in Washington,” said Government Executive Media Group CEO Tim Hartman. “We look forward to continuing our work towards fulfilling our mission of covering the business of government and major news affecting the government workforce.”

The Government Hall of Fame will celebrate distinguished civil servants who have demonstrated sustained achievement and unparalleled dedication to public service throughout their careers. The Teddies will recognize federal managers, executives, and industry leaders for their recent achievements in delivering on government’s promise to serve the American people.

The 2019 Hall of Fame inductees and Teddy Award winners will be announced at Government Executive’s Inaugural Hall of Fame Gala—an exclusive, black-tie event at Washington National Cathedral on September 19, 2019. Additional information about the awards programs and Gala is available here.

Launched in 1969 as a magazine for and about high-ranking federal officials, Government Executive has helped frame and analyze the biggest issues and developments within federal departments and agencies, providing federal workers and the public with key insights on the broader implications of changes within government.

Over the years, it has evolved and expanded into a multi-platform media enterprise that encompasses three other digital publications: NextgovDefense One, and Route Fifty. Known collectively as Government Executive Media Group (GEMG), the four titles reach nearly 2 million government influencers nationwide each month.

Government Executive’s continuous growth has allowed us to innovate and broaden the ways in which we can support government employees through our journalism and resources,” said Tom Shoop, GEMG's editor in chief. “It has been, and remains, our privilege to serve an audience whose work is so critical to the nation’s future.”

GEMG has also grown to include an events practice that offers nearly 100 digital and live programs each year, as well as a research services division and a custom content studio that serve many of America’s largest government contractors.

Some of Government Executive’s most recognized reporting over the years includes its exclusive January 1999 report that the government workforce directly or indirectly employed 17 million people, which challenged the notion proclaimed by members of Congress that “the era of big government is over.” In October 2002, it was the first outlet to break the news that the government was considering outsourcing hundreds of thousands of Army employees, in what at the time was the largest-scale federal privatization ever proposed. In November 2017, Government Executive’s “GSA’s Trump Hotel Lease Debacle” was the first piece to offer an in-depth look at the conflicts of interest within, then President-elect, Donald Trump’s leasing of the historic Post Office Pavilion in Washington.

Last December, Government Executive’s coverage on the widespread impacts of the recent 35-day partial government shutdown drew 1.2 million unique visitors and 4.6 million page views, marking one of the biggest months in readership in the brand’s 50-year history.
