Defense One to Host Exclusive Interviews with Service Chiefs and Leaders from Five Military Branches at the 2021 State of Defense Series

Weekly events begin Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. ET

Sept. 8, 2021

Washington, DC (September 8, 2021) Defense One, the award-winning national security and military news brand of GovExec, will welcome senior representatives of five branches of the U.S. military, including service chiefs Army Gen. James C. McConville, Navy Adm. Michael Gilday, Space Force Gen. John W. Raymond and Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, for the second annual State of Defense Series. Running from Sept. 9-27, the virtual series will consist of five weekly sets of interviews and panels discussing the present and future of the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force. To learn more or register for the event, please go here. Media interested in covering the State of Defense Series should RSVP to Liz Stein.

"After the success of last year, we are excited to reconvene these Joint Chiefs and other leaders to discuss the rapidly evolving future outlooks for the service branches. From events of global consequence, including the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the ascendency of the Biden administration, to the technological race for space and network dominance—through difficult social and political changes—we look forward to examining how all of these factors impact operations and decision-making by the U.S. military’s top leaders and experts,” said Kevin Baron, executive editor of Defense One.

In addition to journalists’ one-on-one main-stage interviews with the service chiefs, the series will feature panel discussions on how the services are adapting, from shipyards to strategies.

Sept. 9: State of the Army, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ET

Featuring Gen. James C. McConville, Chief of Staff, U.S. Army

U.S. Army leaders are rethinking their force as the Biden administration reviews and reorients policy, budget, tech, and personnel priorities. Join us for a keynote conversation on topics including deterring Russia and China, training and supporting U.S. allies and partners, modernizing and networking weapons from land to space, and evolving the soldier experience in areas from military justice to racial equity.

Sept. 16: State of the Marines, 1-3:30 p.m. ET

Keynote Interview TBD

No U.S. military branch is transforming more dramatically than the Marine Corps. Join Defense One's keynote interview with a senior USMC leader to discuss what comes next in the commandant’s plans for 2023—and beyond.

Sept. 23: State of the Navy, 9-11:30 a.m. ET

Featuring Adm. Michael Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Navy

The U.S. Navy's future has become an urgent guessing game in Washington, where everyone seems to have an opinion—and a stake. Join Defense One to hear from the chief of naval operations about how the service branch is rethinking its fleet and its mission to facing evolving threats.

Sept. 27: State of the Space Force, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ET

Featuring Gen. John W. Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, U.S. Space Force

From just one man, the newest service branch now has several commands and thousands of guardians on board, with more growth to come. Defense One's keynote interview with the chief of space operations will explore what comes next, and just how ready Americans should be for war above the atmosphere.

Sept. 28: State of the Air Force, 2-4:35 p.m. ET

Featuring Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force

In Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. Air Force was the most active service branch of them all, which means they now have to make the biggest adjustments to meet new demands to deter and defend against threats from Russia, China, and elsewhere. Defense One's keynote interview with the chief of staff will look at what the service needs to meet the demand today and beyond.

Underwriters that will contribute thought leadership presentations include: Elite: Ciena, KPMG, Leidos, OshKosh Defense, Raytheon Missiles & Defense, ServiceNow, and VMware; Strategic: Cloudera, Dell Technologies, Recorded Future, and VMware; Impact: Booz Allen Hamilton and Oracle; Supporting: DLT, IBM, Red Hat, Security Information Systems, and Thycotic.
