Association of Minnesota Counties Champions Future-Ready Leadership by Enrolling in NACo's Leading on Purpose Program

Oct. 21, 2025

Saint Paul, MN — In a bold and forward-thinking move to strengthen local leadership across Minnesota, the Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC)—under the dynamic leadership of Executive Director Julie Ring—has enrolled a dedicated cohort of county commissioners and leaders into the National Association of Counties (NACo) Leading on Purpose training program.

This initiative marks a significant investment in the future of Minnesota’s counties, acknowledging the growing complexity of county governance and the urgent need to prepare today’s leaders—and tomorrow’s—for the challenges ahead.

"County government today is more complex than ever," said Julie Ring, Executive Director of AMC. "From navigating housing shortages and mental health crises to addressing broadband access, workforce challenges, and infrastructure demands, our leaders are facing issues that require not just technical know-how, but visionary leadership. 'Leading on Purpose' gives our commissioners the tools they need to lead with clarity, confidence, and purpose."

According to NACo Executive Director Matt Chase, “The Leading on Purpose program, developed by NACo, is designed to cultivate high-impact leadership by helping participants discover their core values, strengthen interpersonal skills, and lead with intentionality.” Minnesota’s cohort represents a cross-section of counties—urban, rural, and suburban—underscoring a statewide commitment to strong, effective governance at the local level.

Chase commended the effort of Julie Ring and the Commissioners leading Minnesota counties saying, “With county leaders at the frontlines of public service, investing in their growth isn't optional—it's essential. By prioritizing leadership development, AMC is not only supporting the success of current commissioners, but also laying the groundwork for a new generation of ready, resilient public servants.”

"Leadership is a skill we can and must develop," Ring added. "This isn’t just about improving individuals—it’s about empowering entire counties to rise to the occasion in times of rapid change. Our communities deserve nothing less."

AMC’s example sets a powerful precedent, and the message is clear: Investing in leadership is an investment in the future of our counties.

A Call to Action

NACo and AMC are encouraging other state associations of counties across the nation to follow their lead and enroll cohorts in NACo’s Leading on Purpose training. Whether facing challenges in housing, economic development, climate, or public health, every county in America needs leaders who are equipped to lead with integrity, resilience, and vision.

"This is more than a training program," said Ring. "It’s a movement toward stronger, more responsive local government. And the time to lead—on purpose—is now."
